The Arctic King Crab Expedition

Snowmobile across frozen fjords, pull king crab from beneath the ice with your own hands, dip in the Barents Sea at dawn, then a self-caught crab banquet in a glass lodge under the aurora. Party night in a snow-hotel ice bar.

Beyond the brochure

The real story.

You arrive in Kirkenes in the blue hour, where the road ends and Russia begins, and the first thing you learn is the scent of freshly roasted coffee in the crab saloon.

Then the snowmobiles. Frozen fjord under you, headlamp beams swallowed by the dark, and somewhere ahead a hole cut in the ice with a rope going down into black water.

You will pull a king crab from that water with your own hands. It is heavier than you expect and older than you are. You will eat it tonight, and you will have earned it in the sea at dawn.

The impossible moment

Your hand in the Barents Sea, a crab in it, the sun coming up.

The impossible moment is not the cold. It is the weight of the crab in your fist as you lift it from a hole in the ice with the Barents Sea breathing under you.

Every guest has a photograph of this. Nobody looks cold in it.

The crab you caught, on your plate, under the aurora.
The earned feast

Lunch in the glass lodge: red fish soup, then the claws of the crab you pulled up this morning, cracked open and steaming. Later, the ice bar — vodka in glasses of ice, local musicians, and a room of people who dipped in the Barents Sea at dawn.
