The Cold

Have cold become your warm friend.

You will start with breathing exercises and meditation, and will gradually expose your body to low temperatures by taking cold showers. Within weeks you will feel more energetic, less stressed and better rested.

Official guidance

The progression.

Begin

End the warm shower cold

Fifteen to thirty seconds of cold water on the extremities — hands and feet — first, then the torso.

Always

Breathe slowly and steadily

Do not hyperventilate while immersed. Slow, calm breath is the whole practice in the cold.

Weeks

Progress by degrees

Over days and weeks, one to two minutes of fully cold water.

Later

Graduate to immersion

Ice bath or cold water immersion only after shower habituation.

Two pillars

Breathing during the cold.

The breath and the cold are two pillars, never the same moment. The breathing rounds are completed on dry land and followed by a rest. In the water you breathe slowly, steadily, through the shock — that is the entire skill, and it is the one that changes your life outside the water too.

Safety doctrine

After

Warming up after.

Not a hot shower straight away. Movement — the horse stance, walking, gentle squats — lets the body rewarm from the inside. The Warming Up page has five ways.

Physiology

Brown fat and adaptation.

Cold exposure recruits brown adipose tissue — the fat that burns to make heat — and over weeks the body becomes better at making its own warmth. The 2014 twin study suggested brown fat is not the whole mechanism; the Brown Fat page explains what it is and what it is not.

Optimal cold. Optimal health.

Heart and blood pressure conditionsConsult a physician before cold water immersion. Never practice the breathing retention while in the water. Complete the breathing on dry land before any cold exposure. Read the safety doctrine.
