Never in or near water.
One rule is never optional. Everything else in the method bends to your body; this one does not bend at all.
The official warning, word for word.
Wim Hof Method breathing, when done intensely for multiple rounds, can in rare cases lead to loss of consciousness. While this is physiologically harmless, passing out can potentially be very dangerous in or near water, or when driving a vehicle. It is therefore important to always practice the technique seated or lying down, in a neutral space such as a living room.
Five places the breathing never happens.
In water
Not in a pool, a bath, a river, a lake or the sea. Not with your feet in it. Not near it.
In the shower
The shower is for the cold, not for the breath. Finish the rounds seated, then stand up slowly.
While driving
Or on a bicycle, or anywhere that a moment of blackout would put you or others in traffic.
Operating machinery
Tools, ladders, kitchens, anything with an edge or a height.
Standing up
Standing in an unstable position. Seated or lying down, in a neutral space such as a living room.
Without your physician
Heart and blood-pressure conditions, pregnancy, epilepsy: consult a doctor before cold water immersion.
What shallow water blackout is.
Hyperventilation lowers the carbon dioxide in your blood. Carbon dioxide is what makes you feel the urge to breathe. Lower it enough and the urge disappears before the oxygen does — and a person underwater can lose consciousness without ever feeling short of breath.
This is why the Wim Hof Method breathing is completed on dry land, and why a rest follows it before any cold immersion. The breath and the cold are two pillars. They are never the same moment.
The correct order, every time.
Breathe
Seated or lying down. Three to four rounds. Nothing else in the room but you.
Return
Let your breathing settle. Stand up slowly. Notice how you feel.
Cold
Only now: the shower, the bath, the lake — breathing slowly and steadily, never hyperventilating while immersed.
Warm up
Movement, not a hot shower straight away. The Warming Up After page shows how.
Why this page exists.
The method has been practiced by millions of people and has been linked, in reporting and in litigation, to drowning deaths where breathing exercises were combined with water. Innerfire's materials have always said never to do so; this platform says it on every page, in the footer, and above every breathing instruction. Safety is engineered into the product, not disclaimed in fine print.
